Barbara Jean Howard Lyles of New Brighton, PA passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at Heritage Valley, Beaver, surrounded by family. She was born on March 8, 1949 to the late Dorsey Howard Sr and Katherine Williams Howard.

She graduated from New Brighton High School. She attended Robert Morris University which she earned an Associated Degree in Secretarial Administration.
Barbara Lyles was a long-time member of the former Wayman Chapel AME Church, New Brighton and she continued her membership at St. John-Wayman AME Church, Bridgewater. She served as the church treasurer, on the Finance Committee, served on the Steward Board, 1st VP on the Mission of Love WMS, President of the Lay Organization and worked on the Kitchen Committee. Barbara Lyles also served as one of the chairpersons for the Annual Homecoming Celebration. She has been a delegate to the Annual and District Conferences over the years.
Barbara Lyles was very active on the Pittsburgh West Virginia Women’s Missionary Society and the Pittsburgh West Virginia Lay Organization. On the WMS she has served as an Area Chairperson, Second Vice President, Parliamentarian and worked on the Credential committee. Barbara Lyles served on the Third District WMS Scholarship Committee. She has attended the WMS Quadrennial Conventions since 2004. She was elected delegate to the 17th WMS Quadrennial Convention in Orlando, FL. In July 2011. Barbara Lyles was appointed a Life Member in the WMS in 2016. Barbara Lyles received the I am Sara Award in September of 2017. On the Pittsburgh West Virginia Lay Organization, she has served as the Corresponding Secretary. She served as the Chairperson for the Stay-at-Home Tea Fund raiser, and she served as co-chair for the Unsung Hero Banquet. Barbara Lyles was appointed the Lay Witness Award in 2012. In August of 2019, she was a lay delegate to the Connectional Lay 36th Biennial Convention in Seattle, Washington. Barbara Lyles was elected as a delegate to the General Conference to be held in July 2020 in Orlando, FL at the Annual Conference in September of 2019 representing the Pittsburgh West Virginia Conference. She received the 1st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award for her commitment to Justice and Equality for all in 2011 by Presiding Elder Brown. She was employed at FedEx Ground, Moon Township, PA for 30 years as a Senior Support Administrator in the Safety Department, Hazmat Division. Barbara Lyles loved to shop, travel and dine out. She also loved the lord, spending time with her family and friends.

Barbara is preceded in death by her sister, Ernestine (Howard) Estelle, Brothers Dorsey Howard Jr, and Alphonso Howard, Uncle Fred Howard, Niece Denise Tapp (George Tapp) and Nephew Kevin Estelle.

Barbara Lyles is survived by a Husband, Nathaniel Lyles for 51 years, Daughters Traci Lyles and Renee Lyles, Sibling Fred (Nancy) Howard, Cousin Kimberly Gibson, Great Niece LaKitsha Harris, Nephew Edward (Frances) Estelle Sr and Kenneth (Margaret) Estelle, Nephew Brian (Katie) Howard, Niece Ashley Howard, Nephew Dorsey (Jenna) Howard, Niece Jennifer Rosenberry, Niece Nicole Howard, Niece Susan Cline, Great Niece’s: Victoria Estelle, Amber Estelle, Faith Estelle, Angela Alford, Keona Estelle, Tamara Estelle, Lylah Estelle, Charity Estelle and Mia Howard. Great Nephews: Jacob Estelle, Kenny Estelle, Jr, Caleb Estelle and Carter Howard; Great Great Niece’s: Ka’Shayia Alford and Anisa Alford. Sister-in-Law Mary Lee Oxendine, Brother-in- Laws: Larry Lyles, Andrew Lyles, Melvin (Verna) Lyles and Leon Wilson. She was also survived by close friend/adopted son Khary Nettles and many close friends.

Barbara Jean will be laid to rest in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.

Viewing will be held Friday, February 23, 2024 from 5pm until 8pm at Washington Funeral Home & Cremations, 1411 6th Avenue, Beaver Falls, PA. Final view will be on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 10am followed by a homegoing service at 11am; at St. John Wayman AME Church 715 Mulberry St, Beaver, PA 15009.
